What is the Essence Service?
The Essence Service is based at the Sir Thomas Allen Centre at Doxford Park in Sunderland. It aims to provide support and information to people in the early stages of dementia and their carers.
Our activities take place at our dedicated centre, as well as at various outreach locations around Sunderland.
What kind of volunteers are we looking for?
We are looking for reliable people who could offer an hour or two each week, someone who will enjoy a hands on approach to working with people aged 50+ with dementia.
We have a weekly timetable of activities which take place at our centre and our outreaches – we need the help of dedicated volunteers to ensure they continue to thrive. For more information about our activity programme, please see here.
What do our volunteers do?
Our activities include seated exercise, coffee mornings, a mens group, indoor curling and much more. Our volunteers help us with the running of our groups and courses, they provide a friendly atmosphere for people to meet and enjoy the activities and each others’ company.

All of our volunteers are in contact with vulnerable adults, therefore it is important that everyone has a valid Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate. This is completed as part of our volunteer registration process.
